1. Introduction

Welcome to Asoi ("we," "our," "us," or the "Service"). By accessing or using our website at asoi.io, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you disagree with any part of these Terms, you may not access the Service.

2. Accounts

2.1 Optional Registration

You can use Asoi without an account, in which case your data is stored only in your browser. Creating a free account (with an email address and password) saves your learning data to our servers so it is available across devices.

2.2 Your Responsibilities

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for the activity that happens under your account. You must provide accurate information and be at least 13 years old to create an account.

2.3 Deleting Your Account

You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. This permanently removes your account and all data attached to it from our servers. We may suspend or delete accounts that violate these Terms or misuse the Service.

3. Service Availability and Continuity

3.1 No Guarantee of Continuity

Asoi is a free personal project and may be suspended or discontinued at any time without prior notice. If the Service is discontinued, any data stored with it — including accounts, learning data, and progress — may be permanently and irretrievably deleted. We make no guarantees regarding the availability, reliability, or continuity of our Service, and accept no liability for any loss resulting from its suspension, discontinuation, or shutdown.

3.2 Data Persistence

Without an account, your data lives only in your browser and may be lost if you clear browser data or switch devices. With an account, your learning data is stored on our servers on a best-effort basis; while we take care to preserve it, we cannot absolutely guarantee against loss and recommend keeping copies of vocabulary lists you upload.

3.3 Changes to the Service

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue the Service (or any part thereof) at any time without notice or liability.

4. Third-Party Services

4.1 Service Providers

We use Vercel for hosting and analytics, and Supabase for account authentication and data storage. Your use of our Service is also subject to those providers' terms and privacy policies.

4.2 WaniKani Integration

Asoi can optionally connect to a WaniKani account using an API key you provide, so that games can draw on the vocabulary and kanji you have already learned there. The key is stored only in your browser's local storage and your browser requests your data from WaniKani directly; we never receive or store either on our servers. Asoi is not affiliated with or endorsed by WaniKani, and your use of their API remains subject to their terms. You can disconnect at any time from the home page.

5. Intellectual Property and Content Usage

5.1 License to Use

We grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for personal, non-commercial purposes.

5.2 Open Usage

While we maintain copyright over our original content, we permit educational usage, sharing, and adaptation of our materials, provided such use is non-commercial and appropriate attribution is given.

5.3 User Content

For any content you upload to our Service (such as vocabulary lists), you retain all rights to your content. By uploading content, you grant us a non-exclusive license to use, store, and process that content for the purpose of providing the Service.

6. Disclaimer of Warranties

6.1 "As Is" Service

The Service is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

6.2 Educational Content Disclaimer

We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any language learning materials, translations, or educational content provided through the Service. The Service is intended as a learning aid and should not be relied upon for professional, academic, or official translation purposes.

7. Limitation of Liability

7.1 No Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenue, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses resulting from:

  • Your use or inability to use the Service;
  • Any unauthorized access to or use of our servers and/or any personal information stored therein;
  • Any interruption or cessation of transmission to or from the Service;
  • Any loss of or damage to your data, learning progress, or uploaded content, including loss caused by technical failure or by the suspension or discontinuation of the Service;
  • Any bugs, viruses, trojan horses, or the like that may be transmitted to or through the Service by any third party;
  • Any errors or omissions in any content or for any loss or damage incurred as a result of the use of any content posted, emailed, transmitted, or otherwise made available through the Service.

8. User Conduct

8.1 Acceptable Use

You agree not to misuse the Service or help anyone else do so. Examples of misuse include:

  • Attempting to interfere with, compromise the system integrity or security, or decipher any transmissions to or from the servers running the Service;
  • Using any robot, spider, crawler, scraper, or other automated means to access the Service;
  • Bypassing measures we may use to prevent or restrict access to the Service;
  • Imposing an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on our infrastructure;
  • Introducing any viruses, trojan horses, worms, logic bombs, or other materials that are malicious or technologically harmful.

9. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Denmark, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

10. Changes to Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. The most current version will always be posted on our website. By continuing to access or use our Service after any changes to the Terms, you agree to be bound by the revised Terms.
